FROM THE WARTIME ARCHIVE · 23 APRIL 1941
On 23 April 1941, an unexploded bomb was discovered close to the lower track beneath St Orison Priory. Local labourer George Prowse became associated with the incident after being photographed at the scene.
The bomb itself was quickly dealt with, but the disturbed ground raised other questions. Older stonework had been exposed, and one of the coastal markers was reported to have been partially pulled from its position.

What appeared to be a routine wartime incident would later be remembered for reasons that had little to do with the bomb itself.
